Staying Safe this Spring and Summer

Did you know that May is Deck Safety month? It’s a great time to check your deck to ensure years of carefree enjoyment.
According to the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA), approximately 50% of residential decks are over 25 years old. That’s 20 million decks! While there is no substitute for a professional deck inspection, there are a few things you can check to ensure the safety of your deck:
- Adequate ventilation under deck
- Loose or missing railings and balusters
- Missing or loose connections
- Incorrect fasteners
- Nail and screw pops
- Understanding local building code
- Proper joist spacing — watch the video below
Addressing these items will help increase deck safety awareness and ensure a carefree summer on your deck with friends and family.
In 2006, NADRA declared May Deck Safety Month as part of its mission to raise awareness of deck safety measures – and to keep you informed. NADRA even offers members a Deck Safety Month toolkit, featuring resources that dealers can use to promote code compliance and safety benefits.
