How desperate can a deck get? That’s what UFP wanted to know when it launched its 2013 ProWood® Desperate Deck Contest in April. After receiving nearly 100 desperate deck entries, the judges selected their grand prize winner: Heather Foskey, of Chesapeake, Va.
With her entry, Heather wrote: “My husband is active-duty U.S. Navy and was stationed away from our home
and two children for 15 months. He is deploying next year for at least nine months, which really limits his time for the ‘honey do list’ and proper maintenance of our home. Please help surprise him with the deck of our dreams!”
Now the Foskey family will receive a new $20,000 custom-built deck made with ProWood lumber.
Built only 10 years ago, Heather's wood deck was poorly constructed and is falling apart. The deck has no stair handrails, is equipped with partially painted fragile PVC baluster infills for railings, split deck boards, rotting lumber and plenty of broken lattice.
